Play on letters
Two years ago, while our KickStarter campaign was running, we were contacted by Bärbel Bold from LettersAreMyFriends. LettersAreMyFriends is a typographic concept store in Berlin where type meets new technologies. Since over 5 years, they act as a studio prototyping and servicing in this special section with interactive installations, pop-up stores and motion expertise. They are also known to organize events and exhibitions within this interdiciplinary “type&tech” focus.
In her very first email, Bärbel Bold proposed us nothing less than an artist residency and a launch party in their Berlin space! Back then we were really focused on getting a first commercial version of Prototypo out of the doors, so we declined but kept touch with those enthusiastic folks. Last summer we chose to spend our week of holidays in warm aber sexy Berlin. We took the opportunity to visit LettersAreMyFriends in person and weren’t disappointed! They’re easily the most friendly typography addicts you can find in Germany.
Highlighting Prototypo’s fonts through short animations
At the end of 2015, Bärbel Bold came back to us and asked us to “play the client” for her Type & Motion class at Münster School of Design (she had a intermittent professorship for mediadesign, within which one class she was giving was type ’n’ motion).
Each time we release a new parametric font, we need to promote it in different ways and motion design was something we really wanted to explore. So we asked the students to highlight our first two font fonts — Prototypo Fell & Protototypo Grotesk — through short animations, using Prototypo’s color scheme and showing the values that define our app.
According to Bärbel Bold,
“The challenge included not only to brief and exchange personally via telepresence to France but rather to first understand Prototypo as a product and company, then create our own fonts with the webbased font generator and then create and work as a design studio together and pitch the ideas! Understanding animation as a colaborative process was a big focus in this module. So the class had to come up with a clear concept, animation & design rules to match the corporate aspects and needs of Prototypo. The class contained 5 design students of different disciplines, most of them new to animation.”
Letters transformation is something that suits perfectly Prototypo’s way of seeing typography
After an original briefing, the 5 students, Björn Frost, Marre Geuke, Dennis Harwardt, Sina Folwaczny and Kira Stöter, worked for us as a motion design team. During more than two months they gave free reign to their imagination, building their projects while improving their technical and artistic skills with Nina.
Creating — Original — Typefaces — Made easy
After some email exchanges and Skype meetings, we were eager to discover their clips! They made original choices that we’d never have expected. They linked words like “Creating”, “Easy made”, “Original”, “Typefaces” to our app and fonts in colorful animations. Watching those mini movies starring our fonts was actually a really cool feeling.
Enough talking, let’s have a look at a few of their creations.
We feel really grateful to Bärbel Bold and her students for their work. We can only encourage you to get in touch with her if you want to try such collaboration.
Finally we are also realizing a Prototypo launch party in May at Letters Are My Friends during Typo Berlin! We might even show the clips and bring some surprises from France. So save the date and meet us all on Wednesday, 11th May!
